What Evolution keeps and resets

Before evolving, separate permanent unlocks from the resources you are spending in the current run. The August 23 developer update describes Evolution as resetting Moneta, fish inventory, Twig progress and temporary upgrades, while retaining rods, Fishdex discoveries, Fishing level, Parrot progress and Nest tier. A higher Nest tier therefore belongs to a different track from your current Twig balance.

Use that list as a preparation checklist rather than a reason to rush the reset. The confirmation shown by your current game is the final place to check what the next Evolution changes. The later September update added Evolution VI through story progression, so an older four- or five-stage screenshot does not describe the full present progression route.

Make a before-and-after checklist

Record the state you care about before pressing the Evolution confirmation. An export backup is useful, but it does not automatically undo a reset on a linked account. Keep the backup separate from the live session and avoid experimenting with imports across several open tabs.

ProgressAugust 23 Evolution behaviorPreparation
MonetaResetsReview outstanding purchases before committing
Fish inventoryResetsCheck owned fish and any unfinished collection plans
Twig progressResetsDistinguish the balance from the Nest tier
Temporary upgradesResetExpect to rebuild the run's temporary economy
Rods and Fishing levelPreservedRecord the equipped rod and current level
Fishdex discoveriesPreservedA discovery is different from an owned fish

This table is deliberately limited to the developer's stated categories. It does not promise that every unnamed currency, newly added feature or equipment effect survives. If the current confirmation lists a different treatment for an item, pause and read that prompt before spending it.

Read every currency on the feeding requirement

Evolution feeding is not always a Popcorn-only goal. The August update introduced requirements involving several currencies: Evolution II used Popcorn and Moneta; Evolution III used Popcorn and Seeds; Evolution IV used Popcorn, Twigs and Moneta. Those examples explain why increasing Popcorn alone can leave the progress blocked.

For your next stage, read the entire displayed requirement and note which component is incomplete. Work on that component instead of assuming the largest-looking Popcorn number is the only gate. This is especially useful when you have enough Popcorn but a much smaller secondary resource balance.

Exact costs can change between updates. This guide does not recommend spending toward an old price without checking the current feeding panel. The useful habit is to compare each required currency separately, then return to the activity that supplies the missing one.

Aquarium access and Evolution V

The August 23 update moved the Aquarium unlock from Fishing Level 10 to Evolution V. Players who had already unlocked it were allowed to retain access. That creates two valid situations: a new player can be waiting on Evolution V, while an older save can enter the Aquarium with a different-looking progression history.

If another player's screenshot shows earlier Aquarium access, do not assume your save is broken. First compare whether it is an older unlocked save. Fishing level is still a progression track, but raising it alone is not the announced new Aquarium unlock condition.

The fish breeding guide covers the separate Lineage Lake requirement. Aquarium access, Aquarium Resonance and access to breeding are related milestones, but they should not be treated as one interchangeable level counter.

Evolution VI follows the Archivist story

September 26 added a story sequence after defeating the Archivist and introduced Evolution VI through that sequence. Older saves must defeat the Archivist again to trigger the new story. If you completed the boss before the update, the previous clear alone may not have started the new sequence.

Once you are following that story, use the Nest Tier IV guide for the next dependency. Tier IV requires Evolution VI and brings Golden Popcorn upgrade automation. Repeatedly upgrading the older nest without resolving the story gate is a different task from completing that requirement.

This also differs from Parrot Rebirb III. The companion's third Rebirb has its own Archivist requirement and Night Mode reward. A shared boss does not make the two progression systems the same reset.

A careful reset routine

  1. Identify whether the action is Birb Evolution, Birb Rebirb or a companion's Rebirb.
  2. Read the current confirmation, including every required currency.
  3. Record permanent progress separately from inventory and temporary upgrades.
  4. Export a backup through the official game and keep one active session.
  5. Confirm only when you understand the stated losses and unlocks.
  6. Afterward, compare retained rods, Fishdex, Fishing level, Nest tier and Parrot progress with your notes.

For a platform move, follow the web-to-Steam guide first. Moving a save and evolving that save are separate operations. Completing one before evaluating the other makes any unexpected difference easier to identify.
