Each Seagull has its own loadout
Birb's August 23 update gave each Seagull an individual rod and bait loadout. Changing Birb's own equipment is therefore not enough to establish what every companion is using. Start with the Seagull's card when the catches or bait usage do not match your expectation.
The update also added Current options that follow Birb's equipped rod or bait. Current is a deliberate follow setting; choosing a named item is a fixed selection. This difference lets you decide whether a companion should mirror your present activity or keep working with a separate target in mind.
Only owned rods and bait belong in the companion's available loadout. A recommendation in the Fishdex is helpful, but it does not grant an item you have not acquired. Check what is available to equip before treating a locked recommendation as a working setup.

Decide between Current and a fixed choice
Choose Current when you want a companion to follow the changes you make to Birb's equipment. That can make a coordinated session easier to manage because the intended behavior is to track your active choice rather than remember a second named item.
Choose a fixed loadout when you want the Seagull's setup to remain independent. Before changing Birb's rod or bait, look back at the companion card and decide whether that independence is still useful. A companion that remains on a named choice is not automatically failing to synchronize.
| Selection | Intended behavior | Good check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Current rod | Follows Birb's equipped rod | Compare the active rod after Birb changes equipment |
| Named owned rod | Uses that selected rod | Confirm the named choice is still the one you want |
| Current bait | Follows Birb's equipped bait | Recheck the target after switching fishing plans |
| Named owned bait | Uses that selected bait | Inspect the companion's card and available supply |
Rod and bait choices should be checked separately. A following rod does not mean the bait is also following, and a fixed bait does not require a fixed rod. Read both selections instead of summarizing the whole card as simply automatic.
Match bait to a collection objective
The August update says regular and Shiny bait guarantee their listed fish type. Read the bait's listed target, then compare it with the species or collection task you want. That guarantee about the listed type should not be expanded into a promise about every bonus, weight record or unrelated rarity outcome.
Use the Fishdex guide when your objective is a missing species. September added location-specific fish to the Bridge and Vigil Woods and improved equipment recommendations. A loadout should support the habitat and target you are pursuing, rather than being a supposedly best setup for every location.
If you are preparing a hybrid, first choose the owned parent pair and then consider a fishing target relevant to its incubation. The breeding guide explains matching species and biomes. A companion loadout is only one part of that decision.
Understand Moneta and XP feedback
Fishing now pays Moneta directly on successful catches. The August update says Double Catch and duplicate Seagull catches grant Moneta for every fish created, while Seagulls receive 25% of the active Moneta reward curve. That is an announced reward relationship, not a full earnings-per-hour calculator.
Do not estimate companion profit from the rod number alone. Your available target, the actual catch cadence and the distinction between Birb and companion rewards still matter. Read the feedback from your current session before committing to an income forecast.
The same update made Fishing XP and Seagull XP clearer in reward feedback. A companion's experience number is not your Fishing level. When checking a hook requirement or your retained progress after Evolution, inspect the named progression track rather than whichever XP number just appeared.
Troubleshoot the setup in a useful order
- Open the card for the particular Seagull you are checking.
- Read its rod selection and whether it says Current or a named item.
- Read its bait selection independently.
- Compare the selected bait's listed target with your intended species.
- Inspect ownership and supply rather than assuming a recommendation is equipped.
- Check the resulting reward feedback, distinguishing Moneta, Fishing XP and Seagull XP.
Change one selection before evaluating the next. If you replace both rod and bait while changing location, it becomes harder to tell which choice explained the new result. The aim is a loadout you understand, not an uncited universal ranking.
Saves, offline rewards and retained progress
The August update mentions fixes to bait consumption and offline catch resolution. It does not provide an unlimited offline yield, a fixed number of catches per hour or a rule that equipment can be ignored while away. This guide therefore does not promise those results.
Before an Evolution, distinguish retained rods and Fishing level from ordinary fish inventory and Moneta, which reset in the developer's stated list. After a save transfer, compare the companion card with your backup notes before changing several selections at once.
If a current prompt contradicts the dated update, follow the current game's explanation and keep a note of the exact selection involved. That gives you a specific loadout question to resolve instead of assuming all companion automation is broken.
